Testimonies from Gaza
A collection of interviews that explore Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip in the year following the attacks of October 7, 2023.
7 Jan 2025
The interviews presented here were all filmed inside the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2024. They were shot for GAZA, a feature length documentary from Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit, which explored Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip in the year following the attacks of October 7, 2023.
Some of the interviews shown here are longer versions of those presented in the film, which only included a fraction of all the material that was shot. In some instances the interviews were not used in the film at all.
We believe these interviews to be vital testimony for the historical record.
We are grateful to the courageous and highly skilled Palestinian journalists inside Gaza who filmed them.
Israel did not provide answers to any of the allegations put to it by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit.
Raeda and Hussam Abu Al-Ola
Raeda and her son Hussam are from Khan Younis, Gaza’s second biggest city, in the south of the Strip. When Israeli ground troops invaded Khan Younis in January 2024, they took refuge at the Nasser Hospital. Hussam was badly injured after being shot by what he believes was an Israeli quadcopter drone while out getting groceries.
The interview tells the story of how Raeda’s other son, Jamal, was used as a messenger after being detained. Israeli troops made him enter the hospital to tell those sheltering there to evacuate further south.
Nisreen Abbas
Nisreen and her family are from the Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip. They fled south in the face of the Israeli onslaught and took refuge initially in the UN school opposite the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, and then in the hospital itself.
Here she tells the story of how the family was driven from the hospital, how she was separated from her husband, and subsequently detained and interrogated by Israeli troops.
Muhanad and Areej AlJamal
Muhanad and his sister Areej are from Shujaiya refugee camp in Northern Gaza. Their home was stormed on June 27 as Israeli troops assaulted the camp for the second time. They retell the story of how their mother, Safiya, was injured trying to protect her family, how Muhanad was used as a human shield, and how Safiya was subsequently killed by Israeli soldiers.
Abu Amer
Abu Amer is from Gaza City in the north of the Strip. He and his family have been displaced multiple times and survived a direct hit on their home. In March they found themselves in the path of the Israeli assault on the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Abu Amer tells the story of how they were taken prisoner, how he was used as a human shield, and how they were eventually forced to flee south.
Hadeel Dahdouh
Hadeel is from Gaza City in the north of the Strip. She and other members of her family were detained in early December. She was photographed blind folded and with her head scarf removed, the only woman in a truck full of male prisoners who had all been stripped to their underwear. Here she tells the story of her experiences during 54 days of detention inside Israel.
Fadi Bakr
Fadi Bakr is from Gaza City in the north of the Strip. He was detained close to his home in January. He describes the story of his brutal treatment he says he received when he was detained and during the 45 days as a prisoner at the now infamous Sde Teiman detention centre in Southern Israel.
Mojeeb Al-Bayed
Mojeeb is a student from Gaza City in the north of the Strip. He and his family were caught up in the assault on the nearby Al Shifa hospital in March 2024. He tells the story of how he and other family members were detained, used as human shields and then forced to flee south.
Mojeeb managed to return to Gaza City, only to find his home and the entire street destroyed.
