In the first of a two part series, the I-Unit goes undercover to expose France’s far-right youth movement, Generation Identity.
The I-Unit infiltrates the Flanders branch of France’s far-right youth movement, Generation Identity (GI). At the time, it is growing in popularity with thousands of new members across Europe.
GI was set up in France in 2012 and believes migrants are taking over the continent from white Europeans in what it calls ‘the Great Replacement’.
The I-Unit’s undercover reporter attends a private bar, which acts as the movement’s regional headquarters and where GI members discuss policy and drink.
GI members perform Nazi salutes and joke about the Holocaust. One man describes his dying wish as driving a car into a crowded market popular with Muslims. He is also filmed punching a 13-year old Muslim girl.
In part two, the investigation uncovers secret links between violent extremists and one of France’s largest political parties.
In part two, the investigation uncovers close connections between Generation Identity (GI) and senior politicians in the National Front (now called National Rally), the party led by Marine Le Pen.
Close confidants of Ms. Le Pen attend a neo-fascist rally in Italy. One of her senior advisers says he “shares the values” of GI, while another says that the forced expulsion of immigrants from Europe “will happen”.
Members of the European Parliament from Le Pen’s party secretly attend a GI bar in Lille and declare their support for the movement and its anti-Muslim policies. The MEP Christelle Lechevalier tells the I-Unit’s undercover reporter, “Marine isn’t against this, but in public we need to be careful”.
